Islamophobic Assaults on Muslim Men are Hate Crimes

MACSA strongly condemns the recent attacks on two Muslim men by their employer purportedly for fasting in the month of Ramadan. Such attacks must be wholeheartedly denounced by all peace-loving Malaysians as hate crimes that were actuated by Islamophobic sentiments. MACSA calls on all Malaysians to honour and respect the position of Articles 3 and 11 of our Federal Constitution that sanctifies Islam as the religion of the Federation and the rights to religious beliefs for all Malaysians, to practise our respective religions in peace and harmony. MACSA also reiterates the position under Article 8 of the Federal Constitution which prohibits any discriminatory practices on the grounds of religion. MACSA is greatly concerned with the rising of Islamophobia in Malaysia that has shown its ...

Serangan Islamofobia Ke Atas Umat Islam Adalah Jenayah Kebencian

MACSA m...

Adib’s case: Tommy Thomas should not manipulate facts

MACSA and PPMM view the writing by former Attorney-General Tan Sri Tommy Thomas, regarding the series of incidents that resulted in the death of the late Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim as manipulating the actual facts established by the Shah Alam Coroner's Court on September 27, 2019. Thomas in his memoir 'My Story: Justice in the Wilderness' has said, among other things, that: i. The injuries suffered by Adib was when the fire engine was reversing, "pushing backward the vehicle Adib was travelling in. Adib was apparently trying to reenter his car when he was pinned down. It was therefore an accident". ii. the findings of coroner Rofiah Mohamad are extraordinary because the police have informed Thomas that the possibility of foul play has been set aside as the cause of Adib's death. ...

Kes Adib: Tommy Thomas Tidak Patut Menyeleweng Fakta

Adib dilihat cuba memasuki kenderaannya dan ketika itulah beliau dihimpit (“pinned down”).

MACSA supports Tightening of Legislation in Strengthening The Family Values

MACSA heartily thank Ahmad Marzuk Shaary, Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, for his valuable feedback regarding the gaps in Syariah legislation pertaining to ‘transgenders’. His two recommendations, to tighten legislation in view of preventing disruptive behaviour, are on point and very much welcomed. His feedback was given as a response to the recent fiasco involving Muhammad Sajjad Kamaruz Zaman, popularly known as Sajat, who was recently charged under Section 10(a) of the Syariah Criminal Offences Enactment (Selangor) 1995 for dressing as a female at a religious event. It is obvious that a tougher law is needed to prevent these infringements from continuing as this is not the first time the social media influencer has committed this offence. Earlier last ye...

The US democratic institutions need to be reformed

The Malaysian Alliance of Civil Society Organisations in the UPR Process (MACSA) views developments in the US with great alarm. For a democracy to thrive, it's imperative that an election be conducted in a fair and transparent manner, the election result be valid and accepted by all and a peaceful transfer of power to the eventual winner ensues and be respected. As at the date hereof, notwithstanding President's Trump disagreement with the election result, it is a relief to the rest of the world that Trump has come out publicly stating he will honour a peaceful transfer of power. We hope with the many in America and around the world, that President Biden's swearing in on the 20th proceeds smoothly without much untoward incident. Unfortunately the events enveloping in the US for the p...

Expression of Islamophobia is not protected by human rights

MACSA follows the unrevealing of the incidences in France with great concern. It is bad enough that the Government of France has allowed Charlie Hebdo to incite prejudices and hatred towards Islam as a religion and towards Muslim communities that profess this peaceful religion. To further inflame the gravity of the situation, its President has blunderingly blamed Islam as “a religion in crisis all over the world” while defending Charlie Hebdo’s caricatures that meekly veil hate-speech as freedom of expression. While Universal Declaration of Human Rights 1948 (UDHR) has proclaimed that freedom of speech is enjoyed by all but Article 1 itself stands to promote dignity and rights in the spirit of brotherhood. As such, any expression that undermines dignity and the spirit of brotherhood can...

Mukhayyam: Honour the Religious Rights of LGBTQ People

We refer to your report https://m.malaysiakini.com/news/537178 where the Islamic Development Department (JAKIM) had lodged a police report against a Twitter account owner (Nicole Fong) who made false and baseless allegations about the Mukhayyam programme tailored for the Muslim lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) community. We regret that the author had deliberately juxtaposed Mukhayyam programmes with western’s Conversion Therapy practices namely the electric shock therapy, forced marriage, and even corrective rape which, in our opinion has triumphantly painted a sinister picture of the religious programmes organized by JAKIM and other state religious authorities. The picture implies that JAKIM’s goals and their programmes with the LGBTQ community are in line with “co...
