George Washington Carver once said,‘education is the key to unlocking the golden door of freedom’. In many places around the globe, however, children are denied their right to education due to reasons such as unaffordability, living in crises such as wars, natural disasters and epidemics plus inability to meet certain requirements to enrol into the school system. These barriers exclude 263 million young people from school and deny them the chance to reach their full potential. Exclusion from school will fuel intergenerational cycles of poverty and disadvantage including socio-economic exploitation and violation of freedom and dignity. Education as a fundamental right is enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948) and many other international human rights i...

There is no doubt that the crime of a boy being sodomised by a father he highlighted is shocking and requires intervention which is much overdue. We welcome education on reproductive biology, sexually transmitted infections (STI) and how to recognise safe and unsafe touch. However, we completely disagree on using the Comprehensive Sexual Education (CSE) syllabus as promoted by the International Planned Parenthood Foundation (IPPF) - not just because of the questionable origin and philosophy of CSE and the IPPF - but also because the ‘rights-based’ or rather what should be called the ‘desire-based approach’ to sex education will not yield a successful outcome. The basic problem with comprehensive sex education is its amoral and relativistic approach, which separates human sexuality...

Read MoreThe Malaysian Alliance of Civil Society Organisations in the UPR Process is concerned with the current turn of events pertaining to the inquest of into the death of fireman Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim. It has been reported that independent counsel Syazlin Mansor who was appointed by the Housing and Local Government Ministry to represent the fire and rescue department has announced her withdrawal from the inquest allegedly of her own accord, but seemingly due to pressure exerted upon her from various quarters. We believe the circumstances leading to her withdrawal from the case to be fraught with anomalies, giving rise to reasonable suspicion that the inquest is being tampered with. This is especially so in light of testimony by forensic specialist Prof Dr Shahrom Abdul Wahid who was ca...

In response to the investigation by the police over Numan Afifi’s speech before the United Nations as a delegate of the International Lesbian and Gay Association on behalf of a coalition of Malaysian NGOs working on gender identity and sexual orientation issues, the Malaysian Alliance of Civil Society Organisations in the UPR Process (MACSA) defends the right of Numan to speak out on such issues, insofar as the same are based on facts and with appropriate evidence. This accords with the rights of human rights defenders in the UN Declaration on Human Rights Defenders. Further, free speech is protected by the Federal Constitution and all the international human rights instruments Malaysia accedes to including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights 1948 (UDHR), the Cairo Declaration of ...
Read MoreFOREIGN Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah’s announcement on March 4 that Malaysia has acceded to the Rome Statute has ignited an uproar about its effects on sovereignty and royal immunity. The International Criminal Court is an international institution created out of the Rome Statute, a treaty established in 2002 to create a permanent international tribunal to try war crimes. The crimes described in the statute are brutal in nature and capable of being committed only by a leader or a command structure of any given state. We, working in non-governmental organisations, such as Centre for Human Rights Advocacy (Centhra), itself a member of Malaysian Alliance of Civil Society Organisations in the Universal Periodic Review Process (Macsa), deal with humanitarian and human rights issue...
Read MoreThe Malaysian Alliance of Civil Society Organisations in the UPR Process (MACSA), a coalition of 52 civil society organisations, welcomes the accession to the Rome Statute by Malaysia, which shows the continued commitment of all segments of our multi-ethnic society to promote justice and rule of law without fear nor favour in the fight against callous impunity, in particular for war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide and the crime of aggression. We congratulate the substantial efforts of civil society organisations, parliamentarians, the Government and the media, whose joint commitment to this end was crucial to move forward the entire process that led today to the achievement of this result. Malaysia’s accession to the Rome Statute, which brings the total tally to 3 out of 10...

In a joint statement, the Malaysian Alliance of Civil Society Organisations in the Universal Periodic Review Process (Macsa) said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department P. Waythamoorthy must be held responsible for creating tension during the riot. Waythamoorthy, who is in charge of the National Unity and Social Wellbeing portfolio, had played a part in inflaming tension by initially blaming the police over the fracas instead of demanding that the temple committee abide by the country’s laws, it said. “We find it disgusting as well as scandalous that the minist
