Suhakam And Bar Council Must Not Shirk Joint Responsibility To Ensure Freedom Of Assembly In New Malaysia

The Malaysian Alliance of Civil Society Organisations in the UPR Process (MACSA) is deeply concerned to note that the organisers and participants in the planned rally against the International Convention on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (ICERD) to be held this coming weekend remain without any official external monitors of their human right to peacefully assemble nor are able to accept any offers of legal advice in the safeguarding of such a right. This is despite the green light for the rally issued by the relevant authorities such as the Police and the Kuala Lumpur Assembly Hall (DBKL) and is so glaringly absent it has spurred our former Attorney-General, Tan Sri Mohamed Apandi Ali, to step in with offers of free legal aid for would be participants of that rally. MACSA a...

Asean must ensure Myanmar restore Rohingya rights – Centre for Human Rights Research and Advocacy

The Centre for Human Rights Research and Advocacy (Centhra) warmly welcomes and strongly supports the statement of the Malaysian Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed in condemning the actions of Myanmar’s Aung San Suu Kyi in downplaying the massacre of the Rohingya people as defending the indefensible. Indeed, Aung San Suu Kyi’s transformation from democracy icon to international pariah began with the same unjustifiable behaviour and is now all but complete following her recent yet utterly deplorable attempt at justifying the jailing of two international journalists by her regime last month. The regime she leads is now far from a respectable member of the international community of civilised nations as a result. Consequently, we are elated to hear that the international human ri...

Ahead of UPR, Wisma Putra seeks to mend ties with human rights defenders (Malay Mail Online)

PUTRAJAYA, Nov 8 ― In a first, Putrajaya will host a “live” viewing party tonight of Malaysia’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR) by the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva, Switzerland. To be held by the Foreign Affairs Ministry in Wisma Putra here and attended by Foreign Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah, this gesture arguably marks a change in Putrajaya’s stance towards the human rights defenders maligned by the previous administration. “It’s really a relaxed programme looking at what is happening, and trying to learn from it,” Saifuddin told Malay Mail in a recent interview. In the invitation list sighted by Malay Mail, most invitees are representatives from ministries and government agencies, the Foreign Ministry’s Multilateral Affairs Department, and its Fore...

Comango: Previous administration backed attacks against human rights defenders (Malay Mail Online)

KUALA LUMPUR, June 7 — Human rights defenders (HRDs) had been attacked by state-sanctioned and private groups under the previous government, a coalition of Malaysian NGOs asserted in a report to the United Nations (UN) launched today. The report by Comango, which tracks progress in the field of human rights in Malaysia since the last UN’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR), pointed out that the Barisan Nasional (BN) administration's stance on some issues had resulted in violence, harassment, and hate speech against HRDs. “The government failed to uphold the principles and values of The Declaration on Human Rights Defenders, and has tried to politicise the human rights situation on the ground and demonise HRDs,” it said. “Comango’s involvement in Malaysia’s previous UPR resulted in th...

Penambahan 50 TASKA mampu galak wanita bekerja (Berita Harian 3 November 2018)

Sedition Act in alignment with ICERD hate speech requirement – Centre for Human Rights Research & Advocacy

Reference is made to our recent statement of 26 October 2018 titled No Rush to Ratify Treaties. We refer also to the statement of the Malaysian Alliance of Civil Society Organisations in the UPR Process (MACSA), of which we are a part, which in turn is dated 7 August 2018 styled MACSA Welcomes Strengthening of Anti-Hate Laws. We remain firm on our view expressed in the former statement that any decision to ratify international human rights treaties, in particular the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD), must be undertaken with utmost care and strive to strike the right balance between boldness and circumspection by first being preceded by rigorous study and evaluation. However in the context of the ongoing debate on the ICERD, ...

Bajet 2019: Tambah hospital pakar latih doktor (Berita Harian 26 Oktober 2018)
