The Malaysian Alliance of Civil Society Organisations in the Universal Periodic Review Process (MACSA) denounces the statement by the European Union (EU) spokesman on Nov 11, in response to the sentencing of five Muslim men in the Syariah High Court of Selangor for engaging in unnatural same sex conduct. Such a statement runs afoul of the moral and religious values that Malaysia holds dear as an Asian nation having regard to Islam’s position as the religion of the federation per Article 3 (1) of the Federal Constitution of Malaysia, and the syariah institutions that administer Islamic law, which is accepted as lex loci (law) of this land. The Malaysian Alliance of Civil Society Organisations in the UPR Process is concerned with the current turn of events pertaining to the inquest of into the death of fireman Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim. It has been reported that independent counsel Syazlin Mansor who was appointed by the Housing and Local Government Ministry to represent the fire and rescue department has announced her withdrawal from the inquest allegedly of her own accord, but seemingly due to pressure exerted upon her from various quarters. We believe the circumstances leading to her withdrawal from the case to be fraught with anomalies, giving rise to reasonable suspicion that the inquest is being tampered with. KUALA LUMPUR: Kekurangan hospital bertaraf pakar adalah antara perkara yang perlu diberi perhatian dalam Bajet 2019 supaya masalah menempatkan doktor pelatih dapat diatasi. Naib Presiden I-Medik, Prof Rafidah Hanim Mokhtar, berkata keadaan ini menyebabkan ramai doktor pelatih terpaksa menunggu tempoh kekosongan antara enam bulan hingga setahun sebelum dipanggil bertugas. TERJEMAHAN Di antara bulan Julai hingga September 2017, Kementerian Luar Negeri, Malaysia (Wisma Putra) telah mengadakan sesi rundingan bersama badan-badan bukan kerajaan (NGO) bagi menerokai isu-isu hak asasi manusia di Malaysia. Praktis dan amalan hak asasi manusia di Malaysia mendapat sorotan berikutan keterlibatan Malaysia dalam Semakan Berkala Sejagat (Universal Periodic Review atau ringkasnya UPR), iaitu sebuah proses semakan yang dibuat secara berkala, bagi menilai tahap pengamalan hak asasi di negara-negara PBB, selaras dengan keputusan dalam Perhimpunan Agung PBB pada tahun 2006.
