The Malaysian Alliance of Civil Society Organisations in the Universal Periodic Review Process (MACSA) denounces the statement by the European Union (EU) spokesman on Nov 11, in response to the sentencing of five Muslim men in the Syariah High Court of Selangor for engaging in unnatural same sex conduct. Such a statement runs afoul of the moral and religious values that Malaysia holds dear as an Asian nation having regard to Islam’s position as the religion of the federation per Article 3 (1) of the Federal Constitution of Malaysia, and the syariah institutions that administer Islamic law, which is accepted as lex loci (law) of this land. The statement is also misleading and misconceived in that it purports to affirm specific human rights for LGBTQ persons under the Univers...

Greater Ties between Islamic Authorities and Suhakam a Step Forward for Human Rights
The Malaysian Alliance of Civil Society Organisations in the UPR Process (MACSA) is elated to learn from media reports that closer ties have been fostered between the various Islamic religious departments throughout Malaysia and the National Human Rights Commission (SUHAKAM) as elaborated by one of its commissioners Dr. Nik Salida Suhaila Nik Saleh at the 20th anniversary forum of the latter hosted at the Istana Hotel recently. Indeed the whole purpose of human rights as adumbrated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights 1948 (UDHR) is to argument and compliment the teachings of Islam which teach love and reverence for and obedience to a supreme creator higher then oneself and that the grant of such rights is by the authority of and subject to this creator of all humankind, and not...
Read MoreGeorge Washington Carver once said,‘education is the key to unlocking the golden door of freedom’. In many places around the globe, however, children are denied their right to education due to reasons such as unaffordability, living in crises such as wars, natural disasters and epidemics plus inability to meet certain requirements to enrol into the school system. These barriers exclude 263 million young people from school and deny them the chance to reach their full potential. Exclusion from school will fuel intergenerational cycles of poverty and disadvantage including socio-economic exploitation and violation of freedom and dignity. Education as a fundamental right is enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948) and many other international human rights i...
Read MoreThe Malaysian Alliance of Civil Society Organisations in the UPR Process is concerned with the current turn of events pertaining to the inquest of into the death of fireman Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim. It has been reported that independent counsel Syazlin Mansor who was appointed by the Housing and Local Government Ministry to represent the fire and rescue department has announced her withdrawal from the inquest allegedly of her own accord, but seemingly due to pressure exerted upon her from various quarters. We believe the circumstances leading to her withdrawal from the case to be fraught with anomalies, giving rise to reasonable suspicion that the inquest is being tampered with. This is especially so in light of testimony by forensic specialist Prof Dr Shahrom Abdul Wahid who was ca...
